Is anyone pleased that South Carolina has a 12.1% unemployment rate? Can anyone point to economic measures in place which will lead to robust job creation?
To the contrary, there are federal measures which will likely increase the ranks of the unemployed. If the federal healthcare legislation passes in its current form, new taxes will be imposed on employers who don't provide medical insurance and individuals who don't purchase medical insurance, which will induce more layoffs and curtail consumer spending. On Jan. 1, 2011, all federal tax rates will rise to pre-2001 rates, a massive tax increase.
South Carolina will need to enact pro-growth legislation at the state level which will give entrepreneurs an incentive to start businesses here and current employers an incentive to expand their payrolls. To further enhance economic growth in the state, we need economic policy which encourages consumer spending.
The South Carolina FairTax Act (H.3992) provides the incentives needed to boost job creation and consumer spending. The bill eliminates South Carolina's 7% personal income tax and 5% corporate income tax by taking away the nearly 300 exemptions which currently exist in the state sales tax code.

With the introduction of the FairTax into the South Carolina House, it is more urgent than ever to inform South Carolinians about the FairTax and how they will benefit from it. Over the next few weeks, SCFairTax leadership will be working hard to this end. However, your help is needed and greatly appreciated.
You will begin to see some changes on this website and some tools provided to help inform your family, friends, and communities. Coming up, there will be contact information for representatives as well as suggestions on ways to become involved.
It is encouraging to see the FairTax start to advance here in South Carolina. Much of this is due to your help and persistence. Please continue to join local FairTax groups and encourage others to join you.

Dear Fairtax supporters,
There were two significant developments in the SC House of Representatives Last week. As promised during his address at the Save the Nation Rally in Columbia on April 15th, State Representative Rex Rice initiated action to implement the FairTax in South Carolina.
The first initiative was Amendment 9 to the "TRAC" Bill legislation that forms a special committee to study South Carolina's tax codes and recommend improvements to the legislature that would make South Carolina a more economically competitive environment for job growth and investment. The amendment instructs the committee to study the FairTax as a possible alternate to our current tax codes. |
